Classroom materials

There are both hands-on and print materials associated with every unit of Amplify Science. These materials are packaged together in a kit for each unit, and are available for purchase from Amplify.

Kits include two types of materials:
1. Hands-on manipulatives
2. Print materials

Kit Example: Elementary School

Hands-on manipulatives and print materials from Ecosystem Restoration unit:

Kit Example: Middle School

Hands-on manipulatives and print materials from Metabolism unit:

1. Hands-on manipulatives

Hands-on manipulatives are the physical materials used for the hands-on activities that are carried out at strategic points throughout the unit. There are two types of physical manipulatives: non-consumables and consumables. Non-consumables are durable and, if cared for properly, can be used over the course of several years (e.g. magnets, stopwatches, graduated cylinders). Consumables are used up with each use and must be replenished. Refill kits of consumable materials may be purchased through Amplify.

2. Classroom print materials

The following print materials are included in unit kits. While durable to be used for several years, PDFs are also provided in the digital teacher materials to allow quick replacement if needed.

  • Key Concepts: Serving as visual representation of what the class has learned so far, these printed cards contain short sentences explicitly identifying an idea or concept learned in the unit, and are to be posted on an area of the classroom wall designated by the teacher.
  • Vocabulary wall cards: Similar to Key Concepts cards, vocabulary cards are also be posted to a designated area of the classroom wall; more and more are added as the class progresses throughout the unit.
  • Unit and chapter questions: Printed cards with the unit question and individual chapter questions help students remember exactly what they are investigating over the course of the chapter, and ultimately, the unit.
  • Card sets: Printed cards specific to each unit are included in each kit (though not all units have card sets). Often, students will sort these cards on their desk to provide visualization of their reasoning.

Obtaining materials for classroom kits

All classroom kits are available for purchase from Amplify. For more information, visit amplify.com/contact or contact an Amplify representative.

If a teacher or school wishes to purchase the materials included in a kit themselves, or to simply replace the consumable materials after use, a list of materials found in each kit are downloadable from that unit’s digital Teacher’s Guide or through an Amplify representative. In addition, PDF files for all print materials included in the kit are also available for download from the Teacher’s Guide.

Amplify Science was designed for the most common classroom configurations, and does not require sinks, fume hoods, or any other specialized equipment. The vast majority of the physical materials needed, which are are present in classroom kits, are inexpensive and commonly available through local supermarkets, hardware stores, or online retailers.
