Informing parents about student progress

Sharing a student’s Portfolio Assessment is an excellent way to communicate with parents about the student’s learning progress over the course of a year, with an emphasis on demonstrating growth along core science and engineering practices. To inform parents about student progress at the unit level, it is recommended that teachers annotate the unit’s Assessment System Components table (provided in Unit Guide under Teacher Reference: Assessment System) to show student progress along the standards indicated in the table. In particular, the assessment opportunities identified in the table as 3-Dimensional Performance Tasks are designed to provide evidence of a student’s three-dimensional learning within the unit. Sharing student work products from these tasks can further demonstrate to parents how the student is making progress toward meeting performance expectations.
