Fluency

The National Reading Panel (NRP) includes Fluency as one of the 5 key topic areas for reading instruction (among phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, and vocabulary). The NRP found guided repeated oral reading with guidance from teachers, peers, or parents to be an effective instructional strategy.

Invite students who need substantial support to read grade-level texts to do repeated oral readings of a short passage with a partner to practice fluency. This will help improve rate and expression which ultimately helps improve comprehension skills.

The 5-day Fluency Routine helps students get into the habit of practicing oral reading. Teachers will need to choose a familiar passage of 55-75 words for students to use each time.
