Art Sussman, reviewer

Dr. Art Sussman obtained a doctorate in biochemistry from Princeton University, and pursued further scientific research at Oxford University; Harvard Medical School; and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Changing his career from scientific research to education, Dr. Art’s work has focused on the development and implementation of science education standards; design and implementation of effective professional development; and teaching science with an emphasis on the kinds of big ideas that are currently called crosscutting concepts. In 2006, he published the highly regarded book Dr. Art’s Guide to Science: Connecting Atoms, Galaxies, and Everything in Between. More recently, Dr. Art’s national and international work has focused on climate change education and on the Next Generation Science Standards. He assisted the development of the NGSS- based 2016 California Science Framework, and wrote the first draft of the Integrated Science Middle School chapter describing in detail how the NGSS middle school performance expectations could be effectively implemented across grades 6, 7, and 8.

Susan Gomez-Zwiep, reviewer

Dr. Susan Gomez-Zwiep serves as Professor of Science Education at California State University, Long Beach. She is also a Regional Director for the K-12 Alliance in the Southern California area. Dr. Gomez-Zwiep consistently works toward establishing equitable access to rigorous, inquiry-based science instruction, and supporting teachers in their journey to become advocates for students, science education, and their own professional development. She has developed professional development programs for both K-12 teachers and university faculty around teaching and assessment. Dr. Gomez-Zwiep holds a bachelor’s in biology from the University of California, Berkeley; a master’s in education from Whittier College; and a doctorate in science education from the University of Southern California.

WestEd of K-12 Alliance

Dr. Pamela Spycher and the team at WestEd reviewed the Amplify Science program from an access and equity perspective and, in particular, for their use with students who are English learners. Dr.Spycher is the Director for “Leading with Learning: Systemically Transforming Teaching for English Learners” at WestEd, and was a lead writer of the California ELD Standards, ELA-ELD Framework, Science Framework, and Health Education Framework. Dr. Spycher received a doctorate in education with an emphasis in language, literacy, and culture, and a designated emphasis in second language acquisition, from the University of California, Davis.

Drew Corley

Dr. Drew Corley is a Senior Learning Scientist at Amplify, specializing in mathematics curriculum and assessment development. Dr. Corley is a National Board Certified Teacher (EA – Mathematics) with over six years of experience teaching at the high school and collegiate levels in North and South Carolina. His primary research interests include learning progressions, assessment techniques, and student understanding of rational number concepts. Dr. Corley has presented his work at national conferences and been published in peer-reviewed journals both nationally and internationally. He received a bachelor’s in mathematics and a master’s in secondary mathematics education from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and a doctorate in mathematics education from North Carolina State University.
