Supports for multilingual/English Learners embedded in the Amplify CKLA 3rd Edition program.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Amplify CKLA 3rd Edition offers numerous opportunities for differentiation to address the diverse needs of all learners, including multilingual/English learners (ML/ELs). The lessons incorporate effective scaffolds to make grade-level instruction accessible for these students.

To assist your ML/ELs, utilize the embedded supports outlined in this article as you deliver each lesson.

Multilingual/English learner supports within lessons

Each lesson includes built-in supports specifically designed to assist ML/ELs as they practice listening, speaking, writing, and reading. The ML/EL sections are labeled clearly so they are easy to find. Different types of support are offered at multiple levels across skill areas like close reading, developing opinions, and presenting information, so students are provided with a variety of ways to engage with the lesson.

Each ML/EL section includes specific activities designed for students at different levels of proficiency (based on English Language Development Standards):

  • Entering/Emerging

  • Transitioning/Expanding

  • Bridging

Anchor charts and graphic organizers are included in lessons as scaffolds to support all students, and these visual supports are especially helpful for ML/ELs students. For example, Spanish cognates are included in many areas to help students make meaningful language connections.

The following chart includes one lesson's vocabulary and the associated Spanish cognates.

The following list of vocabulary words and their definitions for a particular lesson also includes a list of Spanish cognates.

Oral language development opportunities

Oral language development opportunities are embedded into every lesson. These activities are designed to support all students, including ML/ELs, in building confidence by applying their English skills in a variety of inclusive ways.

In the following Turn and Talk activity, students discuss an important point from a lesson with a partner.

In the following Think-Pair-Share activity, partners share their opinions on a question pertaining to the lesson.
