mCLASS accessibility

Accessibility features are now available for students in online assessments, and for teachers in observational assessments.

Updated this week

Student online assessment

Closed captions are now available for the instructions for online assessments. Students can turn this feature on by themselves, but you can assist them if they need help. The examples in this section show the Maze online assessment. This functionality is available for all student online assessments with the exception of Text Reading Online (coming soon!).

Accessing closed captioning

Closed captioning is available through the settings icon that displays on the student Welcome screen and during the practice portion of online assessments. The settings icon does not display after the assessment timer starts.

  1. When students land on the online assessment Welcome screen, the settings icon displays at the upper right.

  2. The student clicks the settings icon.

  3. The student clicks the Off button next to Closed Captioning.

  4. The Closed Captioning button is set to On.
When the student starts the assessment, closed captions will display at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Students can turn the closed captions off at any time during the instructions by clicking the settings icon and clicking the On button next to Closed Captioning.

  6. When the measure starts, the settings icon is no longer displayed.

Observational assessment

Teacher-facing interactive functionality within mCLASS assessments is now operable with a keyboard, featuring keyboard focus (a visible outline).

All clickable elements on the page display keyboard focus when the cursor highlights them. These clickable elements are now operable without the use of a mouse.

This functionality is turned on automatically and is available for all observational assessments with the exception of the Oral Language Screener.

Using the keyboard controls

  1. After starting an assessment, teachers press Tab to move the cursor through the clickable areas on the screen.

In the example screen shot, Go to instructions is highlighted with the keyboard focus.

  2. Press Shift + Tab to move back to a previous clickable area.

  3. When the desired area is highlighted with the keyboard focus, press Enter to select it.

  4. During assessment, to mark an item incorrect, press Enter once. To mark a self-correction, highlight the item and press Enter again. To remove a mistaken notation, highlight the item and press Enter a third time.
