Amplify ELA has a Grade 8 sub-unit focused around Jamaal May’s poem “I Have this Way of Being.”

Created in partnership with Elisa New and Poetry in America, this sub-unit includes discussion with poet and professor Joshua Bennett and is part of the engaging, creative, flexible Poetry in America units in each grade.

Students engage in the study of poetry through lessons developed with Poetry in America.

Students use observation, analysis, and discussion to develop an interpretation, and try on each poet’s use of language, craft, and structure in creative writing assignments.
