Practice Mode: Overview and recommendations

Overview of Practice Mode

The Amplify Reading adaptive skill map puts your students on a learning progression that's unique to them, but you can allow them to practice skills outside of the quest structure by enabling Practice Mode. This allows students to play any level of any game or Close Reading activity in Amplify Reading.

Practice Mode recommendations

In general, we recommend that students play within the Amplify Reading quest system, which ensures that the games and activities they see are appropriate to their unique learning progression, providing them with the most valuable skill practice for their needs.

That said, Practice Mode can be a helpful option to give students extra opportunities to work on a particular skill -- for example, if they have encountered a Trouble Spot, you might have them play particular game levels that work on precursor skills to the one that they are struggling with.

Practice Mode and the Teacher Dashboard

Turning Practice Mode on or off

Practice Mode is disabled for all students by default, but you can use the Class Settings view in your Teacher Dashboard to easily toggle it on or off for individual students, or your entire class:

Remember, Practice Mode can only be enabled or disabled using your Teacher Dashboard; there is no way for students to turn it on or off for themselves.

Note: In the rare instance that a student completes the entire adaptive skill map, Practice Mode will automatically unlock for them. You can still use your Teacher Dashboard to disable it though.

Reporting for Practice Mode

While the time students spend playing games in Practice Mode does contribute to their overall usage time, because these activities are played outside of the adaptive skill map, student performance in Practice Mode is not reported in the Teacher Dashboard.

Note: Unlike in quests, if a student fails a game level multiple times while playing in Practice Mode, they will not receive a Trouble Spot in your Teacher Dashboard.

How students access Practice Mode

From here they can choose games to play, filtered by skill domain.

Grades 4-5:

Once practice mode is enabled, students can practice any level in any game by clicking the Menu icon (three dots) in the top right corner of the Workshop screen, and then clicking the Practice tab.

From here they can choose games or Close Reading activities to play, filtered by skill domain.
