Amplify CKLA: Vocabulary Resources

Enrich vocabulary instruction with Amplify CKLA vocabulary resources.

Updated over a month ago

A primary goal of the Amplify CKLA program is to coherently build students’ knowledge from kindergarten through Grade 5 and to provide both exposure to and instruction in academic (Tier 2) and domain (Tier 3) vocabulary.

Vocabulary Toolkit

The Amplify CKLA Vocabulary Toolkit has a guide with suggestions for instruction and practice. It also offers lesson scope and sequence, and information about the Vocabulary App.

There are two parts to the Vocabulary Toolkit:

  • The Vocabulary Guide explains Amplify CKLA’s approach to vocabulary instruction and offers an overview of the program's vocabulary pedagogy.

  • Vocabulary Lessons include direct instruction and modeling of the vocabulary skill, guided practice, Check For Understanding opportunities, independent practice, and Formative Assessment moments.

Access the Vocabulary Toolkit in the Materials section of the Year Overview.

Vocabulary Guide

The Vocabulary Guide explains the program’s multifaceted approach to vocabulary instruction.

The Vocabulary Guide describes the program’s vocabulary pedagogy, scope and sequence, and instructional routines. The guide also includes activities to help students engage with vocabulary words and gives suggestions for materials (such as the Amplify CKLA Vocab App) that aid in vocabulary acquisition.

Vocabulary Lessons

Vocabulary lessons provide supplemental instruction based on domain vocabulary words and skills in Amplify CKLA. These mini-lessons (in the form of slideshow presentations) aid you in delivering instruction with minimal preparation.

Each vocabulary lesson includes direct instruction and modeling of the vocabulary skill, guided practice, Check For Understanding opportunities, independent practice, and Formative Assessment moments. This “I do-we do-you do” format helps you support student development and evaluate progress to ensure students’ mastery of each skill.

Find the vocabulary lessons on the Teacher Resource Site, either in the Unit Vocabulary Toolkit or in the Unit Materials (depending on your license).

Find the titles of each vocabulary lesson in the Scope and Sequence table of the Vocabulary Guide.

Vocab App

The Vocab App includes game-like activities based on morphology, analogy, synonyms and antonyms, and deciphering meaning, which help students develop dictionary skills by focusing on parts of speech, etymology, and multiple meanings. It pulls key vocabulary from lesson texts to help students increase their knowledge of the word, its contextual definition, and their vocabulary skills.
