Amplify CKLA offers a variety of guides to support you in fostering a deeper understanding of concepts and a love for reading among your students. These tools are crafted to enhance classroom reading time and inspire a passion for literature. Trade Book Guides

Amplify CKLA Trade Book Guides provide comprehensive support for lesson content through text overviews and detailed text complexity ratings. These guides are designed to enhance engagement with authentic texts and feature:

  • Essential questions: Connects the book to the Knowledge domain

  • Key vocabulary: Highlights Tier 2 and Tier 3 words

  • Writing prompts and activities: Supports reading comprehension and critical thinking

  • Text complexity ratings: Offers quantitative, qualitative, and reader/task descriptors

These guides are found in the Knowledge Domain’s Unit Materials and serve to introduce each domain, engaging students and building background knowledge before using Read-Aloud Videos.

Each guide includes:

  • Author and Illustrator

  • Book Summary

  • An essential question connecting the book to the Knowledge domain

  • Key vocabulary words

  • A group activity to reinforce and expand upon students’ understanding

  • A performance task to gauge students’ comprehension

  • Writing prompts

  • Text complexity ratings

Novel Guides

Amplify CKLA Novel Guides facilitate contemporary novel studies with engaging, authentic texts that students love. Novel guides are available for Grades 3–5. You can find novel guides in the Teacher Resource Site in the grade level daily instruction, or in the Unit Materials (depending on your license).

These guides feature award-winning novels with relatable characters and exciting plots to foster a love for reading and ELA skills development.

Features of Novel Guides:

  • Daily Writing and Discussion: Includes suggestions for in-the-moment support and flexible grouping.

  • Activities: Help students read closely, deepen their understanding of the text, and build on that understanding through exploration and inquiry. There are 5 activity types:

    • Ask: Questions about the text

    • Explore: Research prompts based on text mentions

    • Imagine: Creative and reflective activities

    • Observe: Note-taking and observations

    • Understand: Questions connecting to the text

Novel Guides are designed for flexible grouping and implementation. They can be used for an entire class, or they may be assigned to individuals or groups of students.

Possible implementation scenarios include:

  • Classroom reading time

  • Enrichment or extension activities

  • After-school or summer programs

Each Novel Guide comes with a Teacher Edition and a Student Edition.

Text Complexity Guide

In Amplify CKLA, texts serve a variety of purposes—from decoding and fluency practice to building background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program’s texts were created and curated according to what the latest and best research tells us about how students learn to read, write, and comprehend. TheText Complexity Guide provides you with information about the texts, the ways in which students engage with them, and a unit-by-unit description of each text.

You can find the Text Complexity Guide in the Teacher Resource Site’s Program Resources under Reading Resources, or in the Unit Materials (depending on your license).

The Text Complexity Guide includes detailed information about Amplify CKLA texts—including Student Readers, Read-Alouds, and the Trade Book Collection. It identifies the text as literary or informational, has a unit-by-unit description of each text, and includes text complexity ratings and descriptors for quantitative, qualitative, and reader/task measures. Text complexity analysis scores accompany every text.


Independent Reading Guide

The Independent Reading Facilitation Guide supports the implementation of an independent reading program to develop and enhance students' reading abilities within the Amplify CKLA framework. It provides step-by-step implementation guidance for setting up an independent reading program and includes reading logs, graphic organizers, discussion questions, and other materials to ensure the program’s success.

Program Goals:

  • Encourages Diverse Reading: Chapter books, picture books, informational texts, fiction, poetry, and plays.

  • Promotes Engagement: Helps students select books of personal interest and become engaged learners.

  • Develops Skills: Fosters critical-thinking and independence in reading.

  • Lifelong Impact: Aims to cultivate lifelong reading habits and an appreciation of language.

For optimal use, integrate this guide with your Amplify CKLA curriculum to ensure a successful independent reading program.


Essential Questions and Writing Prompts

This guide contains essential and guiding questions for each unit in Grades 3–5. Each guide has questions, writing prompts, and activities that enable students to engage meaningfully with new information and ideas they have learned in each unit as well as express what they’ve learned with creative and collaborative projects.

The guides provide content knowledge and ensure that students have multiple opportunities to interact with the text and gain a deeper understanding of the topics.

Each guide includes:

  • One essential question for the overall unit

  • Guiding questions to help students work toward unpacking the essential question by breaking it down into smaller components

  • Writing prompts that deepen student exploration of the unit’s themes

  • Culminating activities that invite students to work together, demonstrate their literacy skills and knowledge acquisition, and learn with and from each other

  • Selected units include Interactive Read-Alouds built around domain-based passages that are above grade level and designed to help introduce students to domain content
